Bonus reference of Ink in my outfit design (for UnderDespair).Ever since I learned a lot about character and costume design, I used my ideas and my style into this reference sheet for my main crossover project. I want to modify Ink's 2020 design to be more fitting in my AU because I wasn't completely happy with a few parts of his garments, which questions me a lot.
I've seen, heard and read mixed reviews of his new outfit by other people, which I feel the same. You can compare this reference sheet and notice a few differences while still being faithful to the original.
- His face and (skeletal) body stay the same.
- His long paper-material scarf is still the same (and iconic).
- His gloves are the same (protect his hands from smudges when drawing).
- His leggings are the same (although it's slightly questioning the design).
However, there are a few key differences:
- The colour palette is altered with the dark-brown being darker to avoid getting confused with his belt and ink stain on his cheek (because it's nearly the same colour value in monochrome).
- The colour of his long-sleeve shirt changed with longer sleeves (because Ink doesn't like blank or empty spaces, so I changed it from white to cream-yellow to add some colour to complete his look and the yellow is the same as his old shirt colour).
- The yellow colour of his crop-top changed to seafoam green (to limit his colour palette) with his sleeves changed to his old design and his inner-sleeve logo is replaced and visible (because Ink's old top clothes aren't the same from the heavily inspired design).
- His pants are longer with two front pockets and five belt loops based on the photo reference with a modern "psycho-cool" look for a hakama (his overall tuck as his pants without the top half doesn't work with the law of physics because there's no waist support for the pants from falling off and the belts hanging from the back carries weight down and unattached; making the clothing diagram unclear for cosplayers).
- A waist apron with two pockets at the front is replaced as a close alternative with the very long seafoam green ribbon-string to make up with the belts dangling behind and lighter (there's a step by step in the reference sheet, for attaching the apron around his belt to support the pants and waist; avoid placing through the two belt loops from the front because it's covered by the apron and attach from each pant's belt loop side then follow the instructions).
This is an official reference only for UnderDespair. If you like this version of the outfit design, I don't mind, although I want to keep it exclusive to my AU.
For the length of his modern hakama, I made it longer because making a silhouette, you can identify Ink easier from his pants since there are a few characters who wear a long scarf and cape, making it confusing who's who.
And yes, anybody who knows my original content, the belt loops are a part of my fashion style except in three knots. It's similar to my main persona, Yasu-Kun's Summer version and even one on Louis' costume design and my punk/visual kei clothing of Jessie.
Overall, my attempt at redesigning Ink's garment is much fitting and suitable as the Ultimate Traditional Artist. I'll be reusing this reference as a future guide from now on.
P.S. I didn't add his belt carrying colourful vials and his giant paintbrush over his clothes in the reference sheet because I want to show it without his weapons (and considering without it throughout the UnderDespair series since every weapon, magic and power were removed during the killing game).
