Three different mural "V" examples for the phrase, "Transforming Lives".
At the beginning of this assignment, everyone has to pick a random lottery paper from numbers 1 to 17. I randomly picked up a folded paper with the number 15. The numbers were in order of the letters in "Transforming Lives", meaning I received the letter "V", coincidently the first letter of my first name.
Originally, the letter V looked like a "U" before they updated the design I'm working on. If they didn't change the typography, I wouldn't enjoy this assignment and demand to swap letters with someone else. Either way, it felt like fate reviving the letter V and I'm happy to work on it, even if one side of the letter is thinner than the other.
The current task is to make three coloured drafts before the teachers pick the best design. Not only that, it's an actual project that could be featured in the middle of the major city in Sydney. However, I need to do my best if I want my work chosen on the letter V because the two other classes are doing the same assignment, meaning I have to compete with 2 anonymous students who are working on the same letter as mine.
After working on two drafts in pencil, my illustration teacher made an exception for me to do the rest in digital. The next week, I was frustrated when the same teacher noticed I drew in Photoshop and didn't clarify what program to use, expecting me to use Procreate instead. In the end, we're both frustrated from our "misunderstandings", but I intuitively picked up his keywords, "pencil" and "traditional look" and continued the rest in a "pencil" brush, assuming my final coloured drafts were what he wanted from me.
Afterwards, my illustration teacher told me to submit my coloured drafts by this week and I submitted mine two minutes before Monday with an adrenaline rush.
Each example design must be related to the theme, "Transforming Lives" and they'll be 2.5 metres tall.
V for Vision
This is my first concept and I came up with the most thought process behind it. V for Visual arts, Video game (developer), Virtual (digital), but mainly naming it as vision. Everyone has their own vision with the power of imagination. Whether it's creative writing, drawing, designing... Every creation people make is unique and it can inspire and transform other people's lives by sharing your vision. All it takes to begin is picking up a pencil (or pen).
Although I'm left-handed, I drew a right hand picking up a graphic tablet pen and working on the illustration of a fictional artist character picking up a pencil. The character is a random original character I made up on the spot, but after picking random colours that can merge well, I didn't realise she looked like a gender blender of Jazza's avatar, one of my favourite YouTuber artists. It was originally going to be my human version of Ink before worrying about using copyright characters and changing the design to a generic artist character, but keeping the black ink splatter and apron as a hidden reference.
My illustration teacher told me not to worry about copyright as someone else used copyrighted characters from various popular anime for their assignment, reassuring me to add more hidden references like Sci and Edge in one of the photos, but mainly red and green colours. I also added a pixel version of Mario with a random level background to reference video games or anyone who creates for video games.
There are too many creative hobbies I tried fitting them all in, and I apologise if I left something out!
V for Virtual
This is the second concept I sketched in pencil before attempting to leave it last in digital (but it turns out my first concept is last to complete). I had the idea of the letter V as a fork or a branching path between two choices. For this one, it's virtual with nature as we can transform nature into technology — taking photos and uploading them online — and vice versa.
As you can tell, this concept has a weaker inspiration. I drew a random character — who's totally *not* Tom from Eddworld (it's another coincidence, I swear!) — on the computer with the famous Windows desktop background of the green hill. This time, it all starts with a click on the computer. On one side, the character could advance their skills involving technology and expand their future beyond and towards the possibility of travelling outer space. On the other side is a lot of nature and non-technology.
Again, I didn't think deep through with this one besides either imagining nature will prevail again or the character absorbed in a virtual reality. Maybe I did this as the reversed version of the "V for Vision", swapping from traditional (nature) and digital (man-made).
Either way, this is my least favourite concept and I hope it's not picked as the best design.
V for Victory
This is my last concept drawing and I wrote my thought process and notes on the drawing. I didn't start in pencil because my illustrator teacher permitted me to finish the last one straight in digital. While I was struggling to to come up with something, I used my tarot cards to read my current prediction and one of the cards flipped "Two of Swords" in reverse. The meaning of the card often represents indecision, usually between two choices — but for my reading, it's the opposite and tells me that I know what to do (obviously finishing this assignment above anything else).
I may edit this post again to write everything else I forgot to say, but for now, I'm off to bed! @@
Also, let me know which of the three concept designs is your favourite! :D
