EDGE (Magazine Cover)

An original magazine cover for my first second semester's assignment.

HBD ScientistSc1!

Science and Fell, characters and scifell version belongs to ScientistSc1

Although it's late for me, it should still be September 1st for ScientistSc1's timezone as a birthday gift for them. This illustration differs from my usual birthday drawings and has a slightly more romantic feel with fancier handwriting to match ScientistSc1's character design and art style.

I believe this is my first time drawing someone else's version of scifell and even colouring their bones as part of their character references. Also, I drew the lineart in Illustrator before moving it back to Photoshop to finish on the program I'm most familiar with. Other than taking a photo of my hand holding a cup as a reference, I find their version of scifell easy to draw until the challenging part comes up to making a dark background to match their shaded colours.

I struggled with the background and made too many abstract textures and gradients before reusing the details over my programmer friend's photo instead — who gave me permission to use it. I also tested many different custom brushes, often grunge textures which are only used for the background to avoid looking too dark or edgy.

Lastly, the background was originally going to be a coffee morning in their home, but I slightly changed the direction and made a photo or postcard background to turn the theme into a casual date too — mainly because the background photo was taken in a restaurant...! 😅
