01. Introduction

“Edge, I would like you to meet your psychologist. His name is ——— and he’ll take really good care of you!”

The skeleton in a lab coat bent his knees and smiled at the younger skeleton. He looks new for a psychologist, but his appearance brought comfort for Edge to speak with someone around the same age gap.

Their first session was quiet and took a lot of patience for the Edge to open up to the friendly stranger. The psychologist watched his client making himself comfortable exploring his office before he mentioned one of his interests.

“Edge, do you perhaps like anime?”

“H-How did ya know?!” The edgy teenager turned around and tried to cover up his embarrassment. He was about to yell, but the psychologist chuckled.

“Oh, I like anime too! That’s why I asked!”

Edge was sceptical before his eyes sparkled in excitement mixed with tears. He didn’t want to be honest, but he couldn’t bottle up his emotions forever. Edge was bullied for his hobby. There were times when he protected some of the nerds in his school, hoping to connect and share similar interests with them. Although he defended them, he was still an outcast. The bullies he used to hang out with thought he was a sore loser and the nerds assumed Edge was pretending to manipulate them for future schemes. All the experiences and loneliness were tragic for a teenager still developing their growth, making it difficult to express his emotions around others. His principal sent him away to see a psychologist, not because they cared, the school and teachers didn’t know what to do with him after causing many troubles with his peers.

Hearing the young psychologist enjoy anime brought out Edge’s confidence to be himself again. Every session, he was excited to see his psychologist and grew attached to the very patient Science Sans.

The psychologist paid great attention to details. He figured out Edge’s interests through his strong observation skills from day one and remembered fondly of Edge’s peaking curiosity at his manga shelf. He always listens to Edge and validates all his feelings to hopefully lead the young Underfell Sans to a bright future.

Every week or two, the psychologist recommended a new anime. On the following appointments, Edge can ramble his thoughts and feelings about the show, giving the Science Sans greater insight and understanding of his thought process. He records his opinions in his notes before puzzling the pieces together into advice for Edge to regulate his emotions more healthily. The trust and bond they built together allowed Edge to listen to everything he said like a friend.

The psychologist was aware of his odd techniques, but he accepted his differences and uniqueness. No traditional psychologist can win their client’s heart closer than him. He became a favourite to the younger generations and became highly demanded on his waiting list from a month to a year-long wait.

After a few months, the psychologist managed to deliver one of the greatest impacts on Edge’s life. He was able to carefully diagnose him as autistic and aid him with additional support for his needs he never had from his family. The news brought his client to tears. Edge can’t express how much it meant to him while sobbing out of gratitude. The diagnosis helped him understand his struggles along with unexplainable natures about himself that he wasn’t aware of in the past.

“Once you hand this to the insurance scheme, you’ll receive all the benefits they can provide for you,” the psychologist handed Edge a copy of his report.

“Does that mean I can see you more often?!”

“Of course, and you don’t need to pay any more, the company will do it!”

The young soul couldn’t contain his excitement for the future. His tears involuntarily ran down his cheekbones as he no longer had to use his own money or beg his family to continue the expensive sessions with his favourite psychologist.

Edge hugged the documents close to his chest. “T-Thank you…!”

The psychologist knew he wanted a hug, but he remained respectful of Edge’s physical boundaries and refrained from breaking his professionalism. He’s proud of how far Edge changed and thanked people. The Science Sans placed his hand in front of his chin and the other resting under his elbow as he spoke.

“Do you know you can have a support worker and watch movies for free?”

“Really?!”

“Only if they approve it!”

“What about you? Can you watch with me?”

“Unfortunately, I’m just a psychologist, I can’t leave my office. We can always watch an episode for every session as you like!” The psychologist smiled and opened to spend half of their hour sessions watching anime with the remaining time listening to anything Edge wanted to share.

Edge was disappointed, but he recovered himself hopeful for their next appointment after the Christmas holidays.

One night, the psychologist called on his phone to report an important announcement in advance.

“I know it’s sudden, but…” He paused every sentence to listen to the receptionist on the other side. “Yes… Yes… I know… Uh-huh… Yes, I’m aware and I’m really sorry about that… It’s unfortunate, but… Yes… Yes, please do. Thank you very much! Uh-huh… Yes, that means a lot! Thank you, I’m glad to have the opportunity to work with you. Have a good evening and goodbye…”

AUTHOR'S NOTE: This is another scifell series that was originally a oneshot, but it'll be released by chapters as well. However, it's possible I may randomly discontinued writing this series because it's actually deeply personal to me.

This story was inspired by my experiences with different psychologists I've met in my life. Although I had a psychologist who gave me anime recommandations, the character(s) in the story doesn't resembles them and entirely fiction like every concept I imagine into scifell.

Lastly, this chapter is more of a prologue and it's more focus on Sci and Edge's platonic dymanic. Also, it'll become heavy onwards...! 😅
