02. Waitlist

A couple of years later, the lady at the reception desk sighs with heaps of documents on her desk.

“What’s wrong?” A different psychologist comes out of his office to collect one of the files recently delivered.

“Ohh… It’s nothing. One of the patients caused a lot of trouble. I’ve been here ever since this clinic opened… It’s just unfortunate how a sweet boy I knew before turned out like this…”

The receptionist ends up complaining as the psychologist listens. He didn’t pry for details and remained polite for her to finish.

An argument can be heard in one of the rooms. Someone was yelling and it was the psychologist’s cue to walk back to his office just before the skeleton walks out of the door with stomping feet.

“FUCK YOU! YOU FUCKIN’ BROKE MY TRUST FIRST! I FUCKIN’ TOLD YOU NOT TO LOOK AT IT!!”

“B-But, it wasn’t my intention…!” A woman tries to explain, but her client cuts her off.

“SHUT UP! I DON’T CARE WHAT YOU HAVE TO SAY! I TOLD YOU I WON’T FORGIVE YOU!” He was ready to punch the human therapist, but he remembered where he was and threw a fit. “ARRGH—!!! FUCK!! I CAN’T DO THIS ANYMORE…!”

The client stomps to the receptionist with tears messing up his red eyeliner.

“M-Madam! I-I-I can’t continue my t-therapy with her…!”

The lady looks up to see the sweet boy she once knew to be no other than the same Underfell Sans in front of her.

“I’m sorry to hear that, Edge…” She apologises, wishing she could help him. “I know you for — how long? — 4 years. I’ve been working at this establishment for over 12 years to know all my clients and psychologists here. Please give her a chance and if it doesn’t work out in the end, I’ll… arrange you with someone else.”

The receptionist wasn’t sure if any of the other psychologists would accept him. They were fully booked and it would take months to be on a waiting list to reach one. There’s a particular psychologist she might recommend, but she’s worried it might cause the opposite effect for Edge again.

“F… Fine,” Edge sniffs to hold back his tears and wipes his eyes. “I just— I just miss *him* so much…!”

“Yeah… I know… If he’s here now, he wouldn’t like to see you sad or crying like this…”

Edge nods politely and hesitantly walks back to the room. After the door closes, the receptionist sighs in relief to hear the room goes quiet.

The psychologist from earlier heard everything from his office. It wasn’t his intention to eavesdrop with the walls being slightly thinner than they used to be. Although he doesn’t know the full story, he feels sympathetic for what’s happening between them. All the staff members have a lot on their shoulders and are aware that they’ll have to eventually evacuate to different locations as the facility is no longer running as it used to be. Many psychologists have moved out due to lack of payment as one of very few clinics continuing to accept bulk billing payments. The company’s reputation fell rock bottom and no amount of fundings and positive reviews can save its business afloat.

A few months later, the clinic got worse with ripped wallpapers, mouldy wallpapers and cobwebs every corner. The psychologist checks in as usual before returning to work.

“Oh! Hold on, dear!”

He turns his attention to the reception lady.

“I… I have another client placed in your waitlist. He prefers a male skeleton or monster therapist, and you’re the only one available at his scheduled time,” she hands over the details to the psychologist. “This one is a special case. I don’t remember if I told you before, but this patient has been here for about 5 years and I’ve watched him grow since he left high school…”

The psychologist vaguely recalls who she’s referring to, but he couldn’t point out where or when he heard the story long ago. All he knows is that the client means a lot to her. He shouldn’t push somebody else as his priority than the rest who’s still waiting patiently to see him, but he can’t help doing her a favour after taking good care of all her staff members and customers for so long.

“Please be gentle with him. He’s a… very sensitive soul… If you could push him above everybody else from your waitlist, that would mean a lot to me after we move out…”

“I can’t promise anything, but I’ll see about it.” The psychologist accepts the file from her hands.

“T-Thanks… And, uhh… umm…”

“What is it?”

“Well… how do I put this? You reminded me of *him*, but with an older mature look…”

“Oh, really?” The psychologist adjusts his glasses to hide his insecurities of appearing older than he appears to be. The skeleton doesn’t know how to react, but he takes advantage of the chatty lady to inquire for more information. “May I ask who you’re referring to?”

“I, uhh…! I shouldn’t say it, but…! Don’t tell anyone about this cause it’s related to the mass suicide incident.”

The tone completely shifts to a much more serious topic.

“I can’t remember his name either, but I believe in our clients that he’s still alive somewhere, out there. Try not to dig too deep on the closed case. All I can say is that you look like *that* client’s first psychologist!” The receptionist points at the folder he’s holding. “T-T-That’s all I can tell you! Oh, gosh! You know your way to charm an old, nice lady, eheheh…!”

“Err… Thanks…?” He never intended to flirt with her and assumes the bashful lady wishes someone to hear her story about her days she remembers with the special client and psychologist. He looks down at the picture of an Underfell Sans in the client’s report.

“Aww… You’re welcome, Sci!”

The psychologist hears his name and smiles back at the old lady. He wishes her well with her new career before he leaves.

AUTHOR'S NOTE: Surprisingly, I have continued this 〇〇!Sci series. However, the next chapter will be difficult for me to continue. Not only it was inspired by my personal experiences with different psychologists in my life, this time I vaguely remembered my encounters, and may make up and use my imagination to continue it.

Please keep in mind the story is purely fictional in the end and the incident side plot was added to reach a satisfying conclusion and ending!

Thanks for reading and hope you enjoy this fanfic while I'm still finishing my college assignments this year! 🥲🙏
